sustainability in the urban landscape
Too often, in all cities, exotic materials transported from across the world are employed in the creation of urban landscapes. This strategy is heavily dependent upon fossil fuels, trade imbalances leveraged against poor people, and requisitely degrades each environment the materials pass through.
In reality, materials with which to build, are available locally and cheaply. Landscapes created using materials salvaged from the urban environment saves natural resources and money, fosters a deeper sense of place and home, while diverting materials that may otherwise be simply landfilled. This is truly a step toward eliminating the concept of waste -- perhaps the worst joke offered by human kind. Within nature works, sourcing of materials is prioritized to that which is derived from non-virgin sources, locally procured. Did you say there were bricks in your garden already? From when your chimney fell down in '89? Wonderful.
